Welcome from the President
Juli 2010
Dear Ladies, dear Gentlemen, dear friends of Jacobs University,
On June 4, 2010 Jacobs University celebrated the successful graduation of its seventh and so far largest graduating class. The 430 young graduates – 230 Bachelors, 130 Masters and 70 PhD’s – from 75 nations impressed once again with their outstanding success rate of 95%. We congratulate the new graduates, and particularly encourage them to take responsibility and to apply their new skills – specialist knowledge as well as intercultural skills – for the good of the people and society.
In the 2010 fall semester, two new study programs, “Global Economics & Management” and “Integrated Environmental Studies”, will accept the first Bachelors students.
By emphasizing social and intercultural skills our “Global Economics & Management” program responds to the widespread criticism of the high specialization in economics subjects, which has come back into focus given the present global financial crisis. The innovative program aims to provide students with specialized skills in economics and management, as well as general skills which are required in the global working environments of the 21st century. It is based around three specific challenges:
- the need for efficient economical and technical solutions for internationally networked production processes (specialized core competency),
- social responsibility for microeconomic and macroeconomic decisions (social skill) and
- the intercultural focus of global working environments (intercultural competence)
Application- and problem-based lectures, diverse specialization options, in-depth knowledge of the German language and culture, work experience lasting several months, exchange programs with international partner universities, as well as the close co-operation between science and practice, are other features of this program.
The “Integrated Environmental Studies” program similarly combines the latest scientific issues of environmental research with the current global challenges. It focuses on the key areas of “Energy”, “Commodities”, “Development” and “Environment”. Through an interdisciplinary approach, fundamental practical and theoretic knowledge in natural sciences, engineering, economics and social sciences is also imparted. The program is rounded off with the further qualification in environmental sciences, ecology and renewable energies, as well as intense practical components within Germany and abroad. The program is currently being developed in co-operation with the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Sea Research (AWI) and the Centre for Marine Tropical Ecology (ZMT). Further co-operations with universities and field stations are being planned. The program thus provides the opportunity to enter various professional fields, as well as the chance to continue studying through a Masters program planned to be established at Jacobs University.
Our services require immense support from many different areas, which is why the programs are being developed with our friends and donors from the industry. We would very much appreciate it if you could also support us with your advice, actions and solidarity.
Kind regards,
